Invest in sustainable fashion – Save the world

The world of fashion is changing, at least it is trying to change its face to make this world a better place to live. In order to create an environmentally friendly fashion world, sustainable fashion is gaining speed. In simple words, sustainable fashion can be described as fashionwear that is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in ways that are environmentally friendly.

Story Behind

It all started with a statistic from The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that humans were using the equivalent of 1.7 planets’ worth of natural resources in 2017 which predicted scathing and harsh reality of resource scarcity.

Seeing this sustainability guru Stella McCartney stepped up and pushed the fashion world to make the changes through her work. There are of course other top level fashion brands like Hugo Boss, Adidas, Reebok are focusing more and more on textile innovation and experimenting to create a greener fashion world.

Ways to be sustainable
Fashion can be made more sustainable in different ways such as – using organic materials, focusing more on biodegradable dyes, while ensuring zero waste.

Sustainable, natural and organic materials:

Natural materials such as hemp, linen, cotton, silk, wool, leather, and cellulose fibers are much better eco-friendly and sustainable materials than virgin, petroleum-derived synthetics like polyester, acrylic, and nylon.

To become sustainable in fashion one needs to use natural fibers as they are biodegradable and can compost cleanly back into the soil without creating any harm to nature. But if any of the materials are using pesticides or synthetic during the production then it can lead to an eco-disaster.

Synthetic fibers, in general, will not biodegrade and instead remain in the landfills, while continuously leaching toxic chemicals and fumes.

How to become certified in fashion sustainability?

Organic certifications (like GOTS) for plant-based fibers and ethical indications and standards for wool, such as ZQ-certified wool. So it would be better for fashion brands to go for it and make their products sustainable.

Global Fashion Agenda in its The Pulse of The Fashion Industry report, said-  “In the worst case, the fashion industry will face distinct restrictions on one or more of its key input factors, leaving it unable to grow at the projected rate and in the long run unable to continue under its current operating model,” There is an awareness that is now growing and the industry is exploring the circular economy, which   gives us the tools to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss in a better way. This method takes the traditional, make-use-dispose model in fashion, and promotes a chain system where items are reused, recycled and reduced.
